  • Reception Parents

We are delighted that your child will be joining our Reception classes in September 2021.  To support the smooth transition for your child into Reception, we shall be holding the following events:

    • Parent Information Meeting in our school hall in the Oaks building on Wednesday 23 June 2021 from 6.30-7.30pm, when there will be an opportunity to meet the Reception staff, hear about the curriculum and the exciting opportunities which await them.  This evening is intended as a parents’ session without children.

If restrictions are still in place, separate meetings will be held for each class, during that week. You will be notified of the dates and timings of these nearer the time.

    • On the first two days of the new term, 6 and 7 September 2021, you and your child will be invited to attend school for one and a half hours with four other children from their class. This will give each parent the opportunity to have a private 1-1 conversation with the teacher for 15 minutes, meet other parents and staff and the children to see the environment in just a small group.
    • We will continue to communicate with you; for new parents to Smitham we will communicate via email. You can contact us via email on office@smitham.croydon.sch.uk. Parents who already have children at Smitham we will contact you via School Ping.
    • After Wednesday 23 June 2021 we will also be putting information on our website, under the About - Admissions section, this will include our Parents’ Information Handbook and a leaflet to help prepare your child for starting Reception. We will continue to add further information including a video of your teacher reading a story, so do keep looking on the website.
    • Breakfast and After School Clubs – information about these is in the About - Admissions section of the website – I can confirm that we will have capacity for all Reception children who need to use the Clubs.
    • a ‘Starting School’ booklet will be sent to you by email or Ping after Wednesday 23 June which will include pictures of your child’s new teacher, and their classroom.
    • a virtual tour of your child’s classroom and particular areas of the school will be posted on the website.

  • How to Apply for Nursery Admission 2021

Due to the COVID restrictions we will be unable to run our usual tours. Please see our virtual tour.

    Admission to the Nursery

Children enter the Nursery in September of the school year in which they will be 4 years old.  All parents are entitled to 15 hours per week of Nursery education.

Places will be allocated on the basis of the following criteria and in order of priority:

    1. Educational, medical or social need
    2. The child has a sibling attending Smitham Primary School
    3. Special, exceptional circumstances
    4. Geographical location to the school

On the Nursery application form, you are able to state a preference for which sessions you would like.  The morning session is always the most popular and is regularly oversubscribed. When the number of applications exceeds the number of places available in either the morning or afternoon, we use the criteria outlined above to allocate these sessions.

30 hours funded Nursery places for working parents

Eligible working parents are entitled to 30 hours free Nursery care. Smitham Nursery is registered for this scheme. If we are able to offer your Nursery age child a 30 hour place it would be for 6 hours per day during term time.

Please visit the government website: Childcare Choices to see if you are eligible.

To be considered for a place, parents should apply directly to the school by 15th January; places cannot be guaranteed. Application forms are available from the Office or by clicking on the link below.

Entry to the nursery does not guarantee a place at Smitham Primary School.

See the link below for the Nursery Application form.
